This is everyone ultimate dream to be earning money by doing what they love. The statistics show how 13% of workers feel engaged by their jobs, 63%, are not engaged, A full 24% are “actively disengaged”. At some point in my life I fell into the statistics and to breaking away from it was a bit of a challenge.
Today we had talks organised by my university called “Making a living”. Three guests talked about their journey to where they are now.
Will Hudson, founder, It’s Nice That
Will told us his story of how he got into the industry. Listening to stories of people who made it it’s very much inspiring but I cannot help but to worry if I will be one of those that make it.
The most important thing is to be proactive-going out and doing it. Trying to sell yourself, put yourself out there and get noticed. Be consistent, don’t just do mediocre work, do your best every time. Perspiration, hard work is the best substitute for natural talent. That is what I can offer as I cannot rely on luck. Positive attitute and believing in yourself is the way forward.
“I began to realize how important it was to be an enthusiast in life. He taught me that if you are interested in something, no matter what it is, go at it at full speed ahead. Embrace it with both arms, hug it, love it and above all become passionate about it. Lukewarm is no good. Hot is no good either. White hot and passionate is the only thing to be.”
Some of Will Hudson and his team’s projects.
In the end we were presented with 6 rules from Arnold Schwarzenegger to follow in order to become successful.
- Trust tourself-if you don’t believe in yourself no one will
- Break the rules- don’t break the law though
- Don’t be afraid to fail-that reminds me of BobMarley’s quote “Don’t be afraid to fail be afraid not to try
- Don’t listen to the naysayers
- Work your butt off- my favourite of his saying if you like to sleep learn how to sleep faster
- It’s about giving back
