“You are not going crazy”

One of the finals that we need to create is a banner. Banner that has a purpose of bringing or recalling a feeling, memory, or image to the conscious mind. I wanted my banner to recall memories of when you felt like you are losing touch with reality and your own mind. While doing a research about emotional abuse one of the tactics that abusers use is gaslighting.

“Gaslighting is a form of manipulation that seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a targeted group, hoping to make them question their own memory, perception, and sanity. Using persistent denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying, it attempts to destabilise the target and delegitimize the target’s belief.”

I have then come across the movie where the words derives from: “Gas Light” movie from 1940 which was an adaptation of a stage play from 1938. This movie is great as it successfully represent manipulation and emotional abuse through actions.

I did stick with the photography as I found that it is easier for me to express what I want to show. What I did here is print off on the acetate both male and female with various face expressions.

How I see being subjected to gaslighting is the total confusion and starting to question yourself and your own actions and judgements. Imagine walking in to the room or spending a long time in there, room with a lot of confusing faces and just faces.

What I did here is placed one sheet with male faces on top of a sheet with female faces and here is the result.

What I aimed to portray is how the influence of one person by another can change how things look. Some images of the female were happy but after placing an image of a male on it it looks disturbing and creepy. I like the sepia effect as it makes it look like an old movie. Movie or reality? That can be gaslighting, make you question if what is happening  to you is actually real.

Once again I think that layering worked well as things are not as simple as we believe or it seems. There are layers and layers of emotions and patterns of behaviour that makes emotional abuse difficult to spot.

I am glad that through my photography and props I have managed to express the feelings I wanted. That was a success. Now it is a bit of a struggle to collate what I have done and make sure that my final outcomes reflect all that.
